  • Earth Day was observed on April 22, 2019, across the globe with the theme Protect our Species.

  • Sri Lanka invoked emergency powers in the aftermath of devastating bomb attacks on hotels and churches, blamed on militants with foreign links, in which 290 people were killed and nearly 500 wounded.

  • Volodymyr Zelenskiy, an actor and comedian with no political experience other than playing the role of president in a TV series, won a landslide victory in Ukraine’s presidential election, with near-complete counting showing he has won over 70% of the vote.

  • India opened their medal tally at the 23rd Asian Athletics Championship in Doha with Annu Rani and Avinash Sable winning silver medals and Parul Chaudhary, MP Poovamma and Gavit Murali Kumar bagging the bronze.

  • With an aim to honor renowned India-born economist Amartya Sen, the London School of Economics and Political Science, has announced a Chair in Inequality Studies in his name. 

  • The Services team emerged as the winner of the 2019 Santosh Trophy.

  • World Book and Copyright Day were observed across the globe on April 23, 2019. The Capital for this year was Sharjah, UAE.

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between the Ministry of AYUSH and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), New Delhi for cooperation in research and education in areas of traditional systems of medicine and its integration with modern science. The MoU was signed by Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH and Dr. Shekhar C. Mande, Director General, CSIR and Secretary, DSIR in the presence of senior officials from both the organizations.

  • The Reserve Bank of India has put into circulation 50 rupees denomination banknotes signed by its Governor Shaktikanta Das.

  • IN Ships Kolkata and Shakti arrived Qingdao, China on 21 Apr 19 to participate in the International Fleet Review as part of 70TH Anniversary celebrations of PLA (Navy). International Fleet Review (IFR) is a parade of naval ships, aircraft, and submarines, and is organized by nations to promote goodwill, strengthen cooperation and showcase their organizational capabilities.

  • The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the Easter Sunday bombings at churches and hotels in Sri Lanka, as the government there raised the number of people killed to 321. The group’s Amaq news agency called the bombers Islamic State fighters.

  • All India Radio, Publication Division and Children's Film Society of India were given Swacchta Pakhwada Awards-2019 in New Delhi. Secretary in the Information and Broadcasting Ministry Amit Khare gave away the awards. Director General of All India Radio F. Sheheryar and Director General (News) Ms. Ira Joshi received the Award for All India Radio. 

  • Former deputy Election Commissioner Vinod Zutshi has been appointed as special observer for Tripura where the Lok Sabha polls to one of the seats were postponed in view of the law and order situation. 

  • Indonesia has released a special commemorative stamp on the theme of Ramayana to mark the 70th anniversary of the establishment of its diplomatic ties with India. 

  • India was the Guest of Honour country at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, ADIBF 2019, held from 24th to 30th of this month. The fair aims to highlight the UAE’s rich heritage, showcasing its authenticity and modernity, as well as its cultural and literary output.

  • The government has further extended the ban on import of milk and its products, including chocolates, from China for six months till December 23. 

  • The UAE Space Agency and Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) have announced that 85% of the Hope Probe project has been completed. Hope Probe is an ambitious dream project of UAE to send a mission to Mars.

  • International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was observed globally on April 24, 2019.

  • A new Coast Guard vessel was commissioned by Chief Secretary, Government of Kerala Sri Tom Jose at Vizhinjam harbor, under the aegis of Regional Commander Western Region, Inspector General Vijay D. Chafekar. The function was witnessed by senior officers from Army, Navy, Air Force, BSF, Police, Airport Authority, Central & State Authorities, and National Cadet Corps.

  • Pakistan Navy successfully test-fired an indigenous cruise missile in the Arabian Sea, the navy said. 

  • Central Asia's biggest and resource-rich Kazakhstan has set up Coordinating Council for attracting foreign investments including from India. 

  • Deputy Director General, India Meteorological Department, S D Attri has said that weather-related advisories by the department to the farmers have resulted in the high yield of agricultural products across the country.

  • A direct flight between  Delhi and Dhaka will start from the 13th of next month. The state-owned airline of Bangladesh ‘Biman Bangladesh’ will restart its Dhaka-Delhi-Dhaka route after a gap of more than six years. Currently, there are no direct flights between the two cities.

  • The Supreme Court directed the Centre to disburse funds allocated for various state governments to develop infrastructure and filling up vacancies in the subordinate judiciary.

  • NASA’s InSight Lander Captures Audio of First Likely ‘Quake’ on Mars. It has recorded a quake of 2 or 2.5 magnitude which is hard to predict on Earth’s surface.

  • The 23rd edition of the Asian Athletics Championship concluded in Doha, Qatar on April 24, 2019. India with 17 medals (3 Gold, 7 silver and 7 bronze) finished fourth in the tournament.

  • Opening up a new avenue for females, the Indian Army on April 25, kicked off the process of inducting women as jawans by starting their online registration for recruitment in the corps of military police. 

  • The United Nations and the European Union (EU) have signed a joint framework aimed at strengthening partnership in counter-terrorism efforts. The UN Office of Counter-Terrorism said in a statement that the framework was enacted on the occasion of the second EU-UN high-level political dialogue on Counter-Terrorism that was held in New York. 

  • The Madras High Court moved to lift a ban on popular video app TikTok in the country, two lawyers involved in the case said, in a boost for its developer Beijing Bytedance Technology Co.

  • India has moved up one position to rank 80th on the global talent competitive index, Switzerland tops the list.

  • Zoologists from Trinity, working with partners from Halu Oleo University (UHO) and Operation Wallacea, have discovered two beautiful new bird species, Wakatobi white-eye and Wangi-Wangi white-eye in the Wakatobi Archipelago of Sulawesi, Indonesia.

  • The Reserve Bank has exited the National Housing Bank (NHB) and the National Bank for Agriculture & Rural Development (Nabard), by selling its entire stakes to the government for Rs 1,450 crore and Rs 20 crore, respectively, making them fully government-owned.

  • National Award-winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, popular scriptwriter Salim Khan and yesteryears dancing diva Helen were honored with the prestigious Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Award at a ceremony.

  • World Malaria Day was observed across the globe on April 25, 2019, with the theme Zero malaria starts with me.

  • Health Organization says Malawi has become the first country to begin immunizing children against malaria, using the only licensed vaccine to protect against the mosquito-spread disease.

  • India has stressed Africa's right to representation among the ranks of the permanent members of the UN Security Council in an effort to bring in a sense of urgency to the long-stalled reform process 

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) today has extended the coverage of Ombudsman Scheme for Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), 2018 (the Scheme) to eligible Non Deposit Taking Non Banking Financial Companies (NBFC-NDs) having asset size of Rupees 100 crore or above with customer interface vide Notification dated April 26, 2019. The Non-Banking Financial Company-Infrastructure Finance Company (NBFC-IFC), Core Investment Company (CIC), Infrastructure Debt Fund-Non-banking Financial Company (IDF-NBFC) and an NBFC under liquidation, are excluded from the ambit of the Scheme.

  • The Indian Council of Medical Research has launched the 'Malaria Elimination Research Alliance (MERA) India' - a conglomeration of partners working on malaria control - in order to prioritize, plan and scale up research to eliminate the disease from India by 2030.

  • World Day for Safety and Health at Work was observed across the globe on April 28, 2019. 

  • India would continue to remain on the US Priority Watch List for longstanding challenges in its IP framework and lack of sufficient measurable progress, the USTR said, alleging that the country remains one of the world's most challenging major economies in the area.

  • The BCCI recommended cricketers Mohammad Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and Poonam Yadav for the Arjuna award. 

  • Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on April 28, 2019, announced a ban on coverage of the face with burqa, veil or in any manner that prevents identification of the person. 

  • Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) recommended Bajrang Punia and Vinesh Phogat for the highest sporting award in the country after their remarkable performances in the last year or two.

  • Bajrang Punia became first Indian wrestler to be invited by American wrestling body for a special fight at iconic Madison Square Garden in New York, United States. 

  • In an effort to encourage customers to buy an electric vehicle, the country’s largest lender, State Bank of India (SBI) launched India’s first ‘Green Car Loan’ (Electric Vehicle), on the occasion of World Earth Day on April 22. The scheme comes with the longest repayment period of up to eight years is a strategic inclusion to the bank’s auto loan segment would be offered with zero processing fee for the first six months of the launch.

  • President Trump announced that his administration is withdrawing the U.S. signature from the U.N. Arms Trade Treaty, in response to concerns from gun rights activists that it could impinge on Americans’ right to bear arms.

  • In a major discovery in Telangana, archaeologists excavated a rare life-size stucco Buddhist sculpture in Phanigiri, Suryapet district. About 1.73 m in height and 35 cm in width, the figurine represents one of the Bodhisattvas belonging to the Jathaka Chakra. According to government officials, the sculpture is also one of the largest Buddhist stucco sculptures unearthed in India till date.

  • An Air India flight landed at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad from New Delhi on April 29, 2019, without provision for additional fuel which was hitherto necessary to carry in case of flight diversion. It is the first flight in the country that flew without carrying any additional fuel.

  • A mini-marathon titled 'run to vote' was held on April 28 in Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir's Ladakh region which is going to polls in the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 6. 

  • Ukraine's President-elect Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed an offer by Russian President Vladimir Putin to provide passports to Ukrainians and pledged instead to grant citizenship to Russians who suffer under the Kremlin's rule.

  • Raheem Sterling has been named the 2019 footballer of the year by the Football Writers' Association (FWA). The Manchester City and England forward topped the poll of the 400-strong FWA membership as a clear winner, with 62 percent of the votes.
