## Coding Decoding in reasoning is a scoring chapter from which at least 2-3 questions are asked in many competitive exams like IBPS, SSC, SBI, LIC, GRE, PSU, etc. You can solve it easily if you learn the tricks and practice well.

There are 26 alphabets in English. You can do there numbering based on their position like:

A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z

A-1,  B-2,  C-3,  D-4,  E-5,  F-6,  G-7,  H-8,  I-9,  J-10, K-11,  L-12,  M-13,  N-14,  O-15,  P-16,  Q-17,  R-18,  S-19,  T-20,  U-21,  V-22,  W-23,  X-24,  Y-25,  Z-26

Trick 1- A simple trick to easily learn it is - EJOTY

E-5,  J-10,  O-15,  T-20,  Y-25

If you will remember EJOTY then you will easily find out the numbering of other letters also. eg Q is near O, if O is on 15th position then P is on 16 and Q is on 17th.

Trick 2 - (For learning the corresponding pair) If the sum of any two alphabets is 27 then they are the corresponding letters of each other. eg AZ= 1+26= 27 so, they are corresponding letters of each other
BW= 2+25= 27

Techniques and examples:

• Technique -1 Shuffling the letters

Example:

Q.If APPLE is written as PALPE, then how is  GUAVA written?

Answer: AP PL E are interchanged among themselves and written as PALPE
GU AV A are interchanged among themselves and written as UGAVA

• Technique -2 Addition or subtraction

Example:

Q. If  BATTLE is written as CCWXQK, then how is ATOMIC written?
Answer: BVRQNI

• Technique -3 Number Coding

Example:

Q. If WEIGHT is written as 236591 and GREAT is written as 58371, then how is WHEAT written?

Answer: W=2, E=3, I=6, G=5, H=9, T=1
G=5, R=8, E=3, A=7, T=1

So, WHEAT = 29371

• Technique -4 Mixed Coding

Example:

Q. If aao bbo cco means see you soon, ggo jjo ddo means dance fun laugh then how is see you dance written?

Answer: aao means see, bbo means you and ggo means dance so the answer is aao bbo ggo.

Q. If 123 means you are good, 456 means she will sing and 759 means he will dance, then what is the code for will?

Answer: Here will is used in two sentences. First is- she will sing for which code is written as 456 and the second sentence is - he will dance for which the code is 759 and only 5 is repeated just like will so the answer is 5.

• Technique - 5 Symbol Coding

Example:

Q. If CROP is written as !@#\$ and FAKE is written *&^% then how is FROCK written?

Answer: *@#!^

F = *
R = @
O = #
C = !
K = ^

• Technique - 6 Mixed vowels and Consonant Coding:

Example:

Q. DEVELOP is written as E2W2M3Q then how is INDIA written?

Answer: Here we can see the pattern of consonants as +1 and we also see that vowels, as written in numerical form according to their positions like in AEIOU A is 1, E is 2, I is 3, O is 4, and U is 5.
So, INDIA will be written as 3OE31

I = 3
N + 1 = O
D + 1 = E
I = 3
A = 1

• Technique - 7 Substitution Coding:

Example:

If Door is called Window, Window is called Floor, Floor is called House, House is called Furniture, and Furniture is called Fridge, then where does a man live?

Answer: Here we have to find the substitute word. We know that man lives in House but here, House is called Furniture so our answer will be Furniture.
